Patient Assessment

Medical v. Physical Trauma (BSI), ABCDE, DCAP, BTLS, SAMPLE, OPQRST, Focused Survey, Standing Backboard (Ox4), Airway Management, Respiratory Issues, Circulatory Elevation, Bleeding – soft tissue injuries, Secondary/Ongoing Survey, BLS v. ALS (AED).

Review Patient Assessment

Questions from 12/8-12/9, Review Scene Approach and MOI, Orthopedics Injuries – upper extremity (shoulder, upper arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, fingers); lower extremity (tib/fib, knee, foot, ankle, leg), Injuries at/or near a joint; Open v. Closed Fractures.

Orthopedic Injuries – femur, pelvis; Spinal Injuries – back, neck, Head/Facial Injuries

Patient Assessment

Extraction Issues – recovery positions, lifts and loads; techniques, Immobilization Devices – backboard, hare traction splint, KED; Transfer Devices – backboard, stretcher, scoop, blanket/sheet; Transportation Devices – toboggan; positioning guidelines to various injuries, life sled, stretcher, backboard, scoop, improvised stretcher (2parkas)

 

Feb 2

Patient Assessment

Common Medical Emergencies – (ABC, OPQRST, SAMPLE, Chief Complaint, Baseline Vitals, consent), Respiratory Emergencies - (COPD, Emphysema, Asthma, Airway Obstruction), Cardiovascular Emergencies -(Heart Attack-AMI, Congestive Heart Failure-CHF), Neurological Emergencies – stroke, seizures, altered mental status (hypoglycemia, intoxication, overdose or poisoning, unrecognized head injury), Common Medical Emergencies – acute abdomen (female – ectopicpregnancy), diabetes, allergic reactions – anaphylaxis, insect bites, human bites, food poisoning.

Patient Assessment

Environmental Emergencies – hypothermia –cold, frost bite, high altitude sickness – AMS-acute mountain sickness, HACE – high altitude cerebral edema, HAPE – high altitude pulmonary edema, snow blindness, electrical injury, water rescue, ice rescue, Behavioral Emergencies – mental disorder – consent, violent patient (overdose/intoxication); Triage – MCI – mass casualty incident, 5 S’s Triage, “Start”; Terrorist Activity.
